Sadly, the simple truth is that tens of millions of people decide to operate a vehicle while intoxicated by drugs or alcohol. Doing so not merely puts one's life at risk and puts passengers among others at risk too, but being caught driving drunk (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will almost always bring about severe penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, fines and even incarceration. Sometimes a person who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately has an underlying drug abuse issue. The court system understands this, and it is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders drug and alcohol treatment as an alternative to other serious penalties for crime. Agreeing or obliging to take part in drug rehab as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eradicate other effects of the crime, but could decrease the severity of such penalties to some large degree. Specifically if the person willingly takes part in drug rehabilitation and is a first-time offender. Studies have shown that a large proportion of people who do receive alcohol and drug rehabilitation because of a DUI/DWI offense stay out of the courts for comparable charges in the future.
