Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened risk of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure their particular challenges can be addressed in rehab.
