Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse.
