Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated likelihood of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their particular problems can be addressed in rehab.
