Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased probability of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their unique challenges can be remedied in rehab.
