Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased probability of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services must be available which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. Nonetheless, drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their own personal challenges can be handled in treatment.
