Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their particular problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
