Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated probability of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their unique problems can be addressed in rehabilitation.
