Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased probability of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailor-made for each individual so that their own challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
