Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased probability of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a necessity, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their own personal challenges can be handled in rehabilitation.
