Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased likelihood of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own challenges can be treated in rehab.
