Sadly, the simple truth is that tens of millions of people actually choose to drive an automobile while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs. Doing so not just puts one's life at risk and puts passengers among others in danger too, but being caught driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will almost always cause severe penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, monetary penalties and even time in jail. In many cases anyone who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately has an underlying drug abuse problem. A legal court system understands this, and it is therefore inclined to provide DUI and DWI Offenders drug rehabilitation as an alternative to other severe penalties for their crime. Agreeing or obliging to take part in alcohol and drug treatment as a DUI/DWI Offender might not completely get rid of other consequences of the crime, but could decrease the seriousness of such penalties to a great extent. Particularly if the person willingly takes part in drug treatment and is a first time offender. Studies have shown that a large proportion of individuals who do receive drug rehabilitation for a DUI/DWI offense avoid the courts for comparable charges down the road.
