Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater probability of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face.
