Unfortunately, it is a fact that tens of millions of people choose to drive an automobile while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs. Doing so not merely puts one's life in danger and puts passengers and others at risk at the same time, but being caught driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will usually result in serious penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, monetary penalties and in many cases incarceration. Often times a person who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately has an underlying drug abuse issue. The court system knows this, and it is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders drug and alcohol rehab rather than other extreme penalties for their crime. Agreeing or obliging to participate in drug rehab as a DUI/DWI Offender might not exactly completely eliminate other effects from the crime, but could decrease the severity of such consequences to a large degree. Particularly if the individual willingly takes part in drug and alcohol rehab and is a first time offender. Studies have shown that a large proportion of folks who do receive alcohol and drug rehab because of a DUI/DWI offense stay out of the courts for similar charges later on.
