Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each individual so that their unique challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
