Dual diagnosis rehabs are programs which provide rehabilitation to address both addiction and mental health concerns simultaneously. Dual diagnosis is an extremely prevalent circumstance for folks involved with drug abuse, as those that have mental health problems often self medicate with alcohol and drugs to experience some form of temporary respite from their disorder. Providing a secure setting is vital so that dual diagnosis clients can feel relaxed and remain undistracted from circumstances that could cut across their program and progress. Rehabilitation counselors will work to recognize environmental issues in the client's life such as negative people in their lives or other things which need to be addressed in order for the person to remain mentally stable and abstinen t whenever they depart dual diagnosis rehab. Dual diagnosis clients also benefit from behavioral rehabilitation that helps them develop far better coping mechanisms so they are better able to deal with life situations well if they depart dual diagnosis rehab rather than returning to alcohol and drugs as an inferior option.
