Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions in order that treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for everybody so that their own personal problems can be remedied in treatment.
