Hearing impaired persons generally have an elevated risk of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each individual so that their own challenges can be treated in rehab.
