Offering gender-specific rehabilitation services has shown to be very helpful in circumstances where standard rehabilitation settings have fallen short, such as dealing with situations within a women's life which are unique and distressing. Such issues may pertain to sexual abuse, physical trauma, psychological abuse, eating disorders, one's family and being a mother, and other significant issues that are particular to women. Research shows that women also can become involved in drug abuse more easily than men, and are more predisposed to illness as a result of drug abuse problems than males consequently. Because of responsibilities in their home, women also tend to put off searching for and undergoing treatment, a circumstance which can be a catalyst for catastrophe. That said, rehabilitation services for women are designed to ensure that a women's needs would be the focus and priority. Much like coed centers, drug treatment centers that provide rehab services to women help women through detoxification and withdrawal as a first step. After this step, counselors help women concentrate on both basic and gender-specific problems who have triggered their substance abuse. Women also benefit from the beneficial support from their female peers, and some programs that provide rehab services to women offer client beds for her kids.
