Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater chance of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available to them which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure their unique problems can be treated in treatment.
