Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased chance of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their own personal problems can be treated in rehab.
