Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased likelihood of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Nonetheless, drug treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter.
