Hearing impaired persons tend to have an elevated chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services might be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their own personal problems can be handled in rehab.
