Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased risk of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services must be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug use.
