Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased likelihood of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs.
