Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available which cater to their circumstances. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse.
