Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated probability of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support so that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each individual so that their particular challenges can be treated in rehab.
