Criminal justice client rehabs can be considered as being a significantly better option than prison time or significant fines for those who have already been convicted of any type of alcohol or drug related crime. For instance, somebody who has been in prison for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs may qualify to receive treatment services for problem instead of serving time in jail. The judge could even order that the individual receive rehabilitation, either alone or together with other consequences. First-time offenders in particular are often given the opportunity to go with a criminal justice client rehab rather than other sentencing, and it is highly recommended they take advantage of it when it is a choice. The concept behind criminal justice client rehabs is that it is far more efficient and effective to invest commitment into rehabilitation than enforcement of other consequences. Much research has been carried out to observe how effective this strategy is on recidivism rates, i.e. if the individual returns or not to criminal justice system following rehabilitation. The signs and indicators appear to be quite positive, and criminal justice clients who take part in rehabilitation have better chance of remaining out of the system following rehab.
