Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater risk of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug use. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face.
