Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased likelihood of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each person to ensure their own personal problems can be addressed in treatment.
