Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each person so that their own problems can be treated in treatment.
