Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their particular challenges can be treated in treatment.
