Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased probability of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use.
