Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased probability of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services have to be available which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services might be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure their particular challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
