Being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS may set off drug use, or risky sexual behavior as a result of abusing drugs may have caused the individual to contract the disease. Individuals who have HIV/AIDS, either as a result of their drug abuse or as a pre-existing problem prior to their substance abuse issue, often require rehab services tailored to fulfill their specific needs and challenges. Some of these challenges are physical in nature, because of the fact that substance abusers with HIV/AIDS almost never care for themselves and take the proper medicines they need to preserve their own health. Consequently, they arrive to treatment in very poor physical shape and this will have to be handled as a priority whilst dealing with other important issues. Aside from the obvious requirement to offer medical services during rehab, those that have HIV/AIDS should also tackle more deeply rooted problems which brought about their drug or alcohol use. Usually, individuals have circumstances within their lives which are purely environmental which may have caused them to use drugs or alcohol, such as oppressive situations in their lives or detrimental relationships. These are the issues which rehabilitation counselors will focus on in HIV/AIDS treatment services.
