Hearing impaired individuals generally have a greater probability of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each person so that their unique challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
