Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased risk of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be available which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, drug treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each person so that their particular problems can be handled in treatment.
