Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased likelihood of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each individual so that their own personal challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
