Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened risk of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be at hand which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face.
