LGBT is short for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and there are centers which address the unique needs of these clients. Those who are LGBT can feel alone, misunderstood, and seen as socially unwanted. This is sometimes an extremely tough and painful way to live, and leads many LGBT people to a lifestyle of substance abuse to numb this pain. Someone that is LGBT may not feel comfortable in a traditional rehabilitation program amongst individuals who aren't experiencing the same problems they are experiencing within their lives. A LGBT center offers an environment that is free of judgment, where LGBT clients can be completely safe and comfortable divulging to their peers and rehabilitation counselors problems which should be handled to enable them to get better. Rehabilitation counselors in a LGBT rehab will help clients mend relationships with their family members, in the case their family disagree with their sexual preference as is often the case. This situation is certainly a common trigger for substance abuse, which is an illustration of something which could be handled in rehabilitation. LGBT clients often just want to be accepted within their lives, and rehabilitation will help them accept themselves and create confidence to be able to lead a wholesome life without any alcohol and drugs.
