Hearing impaired persons generally have an elevated chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support in order that rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure their unique problems can be remedied in rehabilitation.
