Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated risk of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for everybody so that their own problems can be addressed in rehab.
