Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater probability of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be at hand which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support so that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure that their own personal problems can be addressed in treatment.
