Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater chance of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehab services have to be at hand which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their own challenges can be handled in rehabilitation.
