Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened risk of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each person to ensure their particular challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
