Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened probability of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each person to ensure their own challenges can be addressed in rehab.
