Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened chance of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each individual so that their own challenges can be treated in rehab.
