Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater likelihood of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol.
