Offering gender-specific treatment services has proven very useful in circumstances where traditional rehab settings have not meet expectations, for example coping with situations within a women's life that are distinctive and traumatic. Such difficulties may pertain to sexual abuse, physical trauma, mental abuse, eating disorders, one's family and being a mother, or other serious issues which are specific to women. Research shows that women can also become involved in substance abuse more readily than men, and so are more vulnerable to illness because of drug abuse problems than males as a result. Because of obligations in the home, women also tend to put off trying to find and receiving care for addiction, a situation which can be a catalyst for disaster. That said, treatment services for women are created so that a women's needs would be the concentration and priority. Comparable to coed centers, drug treatment programs which provide rehab services to women help women through detoxification and withdrawal as a starting point. Following this step, counselors help women focus on both general and gender specific problems which may have induced their drug abuse. Women also benefit from the constructive support from their female peers, and a few programs that provide treatment services to women also provide client beds for their young children.
