Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. Nonetheless, drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for everybody so that their own personal challenges can be remedied in treatment.
